You Can Never Have Too Many Facebook Likes

By Peter Latriano | Inspiration

It’s been a great weekend filled with summer adventures. You went to some beautiful places, met interesting people and recorded it all on your camera. Excited to share your experiences with your loved ones, you quickly post your pictures on your social media sites, and wait for the likes to start coming in. But they don’t. There’s nothing worse than posting some of your proud photography on Facebook, only to have it ignored. Chances are that your friends and family aren’t doing it on purpose. But mastering social media can be tricky. Fortunately there are some simple steps you can follow to ensure that you never walk into a digital room full of crickets again.

Keep it short

As sad as it makes me to admit this, people don’t like to read. Everybody is on a busy schedule, with little time to spare. So when you include a long paragraph with your pictures, describing every little detail, there is a good chance that your audience is going to skip over your post and move right along to one that is shorter and that can be more quickly digested. So when it comes to social media, keep it brief. Let your photograph do most of the talking. Using hash tags can be a good way to convey a mood or feeling quickly and easily, without adding to your character count.

Don’t Photo Dump

Just as people don’t like to read too much nowadays, they also don’t want to see too much. People are constantly bombarded with content throughout each day, usually more than can be processed. If you do a photo dump and unload a whole album at once, there is a good chance that you will be ignored. By only sharing your absolute best photos, you will greatly increase your likes. Sharing one photograph at a time is most ideal. Quality over quantity is key here.

Find Your Voice

When you post something on the internet, it’s there forever. So it’s best to find your voice, and to articulate yourself carefully. But most importantly, be yourself! People can sense inauthenticity from a mile away, even on when it’s on social media. So be true to you!

Be Humble

Often when it comes to social media, people paint a perfect picture of their life. It’s great to share with others, but when you post picture after picture with captions like “life can’t get much better than this!” you may make your audience jealous, which leads to a lack of likes. Sure, your life probably is pretty great, but be humble in your approach and you will be rewarded with more likes and shares than you will know what to do with.

Perfect Your Timing

Timing is everything, especially when social media moves so fast. It is important to post your photos when your audience is actively online. This may vary, depending on whom you are posting for. If you post all of your pictures early in the morning, but most of your audience doesn’t check Facebook until night, you may be missing your window of recognition. In addition, be seasonal! Don’t post your 4th of July photographs in November, when summer is long forgotten. Be punctual, and learn how to perfect your timing.
